As member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League, the Royals are based in Kansas City, Missouri. The name originated from an annual horse show and rodeo held in Kansas City since 1899, called the American Royal. The club was founded by an Pharmaceutical Magnate and a philanthropist, Ewing Kauffman as an expansion franchise in 1969. The Royals played their inaugural game on April 8, 1969 where they defeated the Minnesota Twins 4–3.

The Royals had their first winning season in 1971 under manager Bob Lemon who led them to a second-place finish. They won three straight division championships from 1976 to 1978 under the new manager Whitey Herzog, after replacing Jack McKeon who took over Bon Lemon in 1973. But the Royals lost their three straight American League Championship Series to New York Yankees. After finishing second in the 1979 season, the Royals advanced to the American League Championship Series where they once again faced the Yankees who were vanquished this time by the Royals in a three-game sweep. They however lost six games to Philadelphia Phillies after the ALCS.

In 1985 season, the Royals topped the Western Division for the second consecutive season and the sixth time in ten years. They ended winning their first world championship title over St. Louis Cardinals. A heartbreaking event took over the Royals at the beginning of 1990, with owners Ewing and Muriel Kauffman’s death who brought excitement and success to baseball in Kansas City. With Kauffman gone, the team was left without permanent ownership until David Glass purchased the team in 2000 for $96 million.

In 2002, the Royals set a new team record for futility, losing 100 games for the first time in franchise history. However, the following season, the Royals landed their first winning record since the 1994 season under the guidance of the then manager, Tony Peña who was named American League’s Manager of the Year. For most of the season, the team made it first but ended up in third place behind Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins who won the American League Central Division title.

After Tony Peña’s resignation in 2005, the Royals would not do much better winning except for the 5 out of 16 before Buddy Bell took over on May and sparked some lights into the team who posted a 4-game win streak including a 3-game sweep of the New York Yankees. Ironically, the Royals lost 19 straight games in August after playing better under Manager Bell, and ended in the last place once again carrying a disappointing record of 56-106.

Kansas City Royals TicketsKauffman Stadium
Since its opening on April 10, 1973, Royal Stadium was the team’s home ballpark until the present times. The stadium was renamed Kauffman Stadium in July 1993 to honor the Royals founding owner, Ewing Kauffman. The park’s prominent feature is the fountain and waterfall display behind the right-field fence.  The fountain is considered the largest privately-funded fountain in the world standing at 322 feet. It recently underwent a major renovation amounting to $250 million which began after the 2007 season and was completed in July 2009. Some of the renovations include the following:

  • New high definition scoreboard, dubbed "Crown Vision" and control room
  • Kids' area
  • Right field sports bar-themed restaurant
  • Left field hall of fame and conference center
  • New and upgraded concession and toilet amenities on all concourses
  • Enhanced vertical circulation to all levels
  • Four new entry ticket gates
  • New press facilities
